I've read the 1st four chapters and find the book very interesting and informative. I think we are probably already doing some/many of the things discussed.. maybe just not spending the amount of time this school system does on direct instruction. Hopefully this book will guide us to tweak the "best practices" we are already doing at N.U.E.

  1. Connie,
I agree that we have a lot of best practices happening at North Union. I think that tweaking our balance of direct instruction and guided reading may help our scores. We may also need to look at more consistant after school tutoring to help lower students catch up.

  2. Connie, I think you are right. I think we need to attack reading before school, during school, and after school if we are serious about reading being a priority for our kids and for our kids to succeed in school. I hope that the MAP testing will give us a lot of info to help with meeting the needs of our kids who struggle with certain skills.

  3. Chapter 3 was very interesting for me since I love to number crunch! Arriving at the necessary number of minutes of instruct per student using the MAP scores given during our KRAL test in September will drive our instruct and planning. Just think of waiting until October once we've learned the class and actually see the gaps how easy these would be met so much earlier using data from the MAP test the very first week of school! I'm so looking forward to doing this!
